TEFL (Teacher Training)Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.
Dates for 2012:9th January - 3rd February Entry requirements:In order to be accepted onto the course participants must be fluent in English & have completed High school. In the case of mature students, application will be considered on the basis of experience rather than educational qualifications. Teaching experience is not necessary in order to complete the course. Times:Classes begin at 8.30 am daily with a lunch break from 13.00 – 14.00. Teaching practice will be held in the afternoons until 16.00 and participants will be asked to complete assignments and prepare classes after hours. On the afternoons when trainees are not teaching they will be free to choose between working by themselves or assessing peer teaching. Price:The cost of the course is available on the program fees page. A deposit is needed once you have completed your application form and have submitted both to TIES. Course Description:Study of the practical teaching of English language. This course is designed to assist the student toteach in a language school where the pupils are either foreign or English second language speakers.The course includes both theory and practical language teaching. The first part of the course deals with the philosophy and theory of language teaching and learning.The second part of the course deals with the practical aspects of teaching English as a ForeignLanguage. The practical stage is in the classroom where the participants in the course put thetheory into practice. Objectives:The main objectives of the course are to:
Certificate and Teaching Report:A final grade of at least C is required as a pass mark for this course. Successful candidates will beissued with a TEFL certificate and a detailed teaching report. Marks are broken down as follows: Test 20% Part 1: Includes the following: Lesson planning, Learner motivation, Language teaching methodology, Classroom management, Using games and music in teaching, Mistakes and feedback, Teaching aids and their effective use in the classroom, Teaching the receptive skills (listening and reading), Teaching the productive skills (writing and speaking), Teaching vocabulary and Teaching pronunciation and learning the phonetic script Part 2: Grammar Forum Participants will be asked to research language for a pre course assignment. The lecturer will present the participants with a detailed grammar file and will present lectures on various aspects of language, grammar jargon and teaching suggestions when presenting grammar in the classroom. Part 3: Looking Further Includes the following: Using course books, Syllabus design, Teaching Children, Learner Autonomy, Exams & assessment, English for special purposes, The developing teacher and Finding Work Part 4: Practical Teaching This component involves observation of lessons taught, and the actual teaching of English as a Foreign Language to English Language students. Participants will teach from the first week of the course. Lessons are assessed by both teaching peers and the lecturers. Trainees will be monitored on their progress. Participants will be expected to write up assessments of the lessons taught, and detailed feedback will be given on all lessons. Part 5: Portfolio Participants will be asked to build a portfolio of all information gathered on the course. This will include notes taken on the given lectures, lesson assessments, lesson plans, resource materials, etc. This portfolio must be handed in to the lecturer for grading in the last week of the course. Part 6: TEFL plus For a small extra fee this is for those who wish to gain extra teaching experience the course has an optional add on section. Trainees who choose to take TEFL plus will be asked to observe a further four taught lessons, as well as to plan and teach an additional four lessons during the two weeks directly after the course. These lessons will be assessed and detailed feedback will be given. Absences and Tardies: Students are expected to attend and to participate in all classes because each individual’s contribution adds to the total learning experience of the group. It is understood that emergencies are inevitable, however due to the intensive nature of the course trainees cannot afford to miss any classes.
